Spain School Visit

The absolute highlight of my trip so far has been the visit to the private school. There is just something about being in a school, and talking, or attempting to talk, to students and watching teachers in action that I love. After arriving at Colegio International Alminar, we started our visit with a mini presentation put on by one of the teachers, Mercedes. She explained the school mission, what a typical day looks like and answered our many questions about teaching and school life in Spain. Then it was off to the classroom. We broke up into small groups so […]

2 Days til Spain…Preparing for Substitutes

As I sit at home on another snow day, I can’t help but begin to feel slightly anxious about my trip to Spain, which is in just 2 DAYS! Eeek! I can’t believe it is almost here. While I am more than ready to hit the road (or runway as the case may be), there is still plenty to be done at school to make sure my substitutes will be ready to fill in for me for the two days I will miss. I have finished packing, repacking, double checking the packing here at home, which is nice. Wednesday afternoon […]

Learning (Finnish) Isn’t Easy

Recently I had a major lightbulb moment about teaching and learning. To prepare for my upcoming trip to Finland this summer, I decided to embark on a quest to learn a new language, Finnish. For some this may sound like a walk in the park, but for me let me tell you, it is not easy. I have never considered my self a “language” person. A passing grade through Spanish III was enough to meet the foreign language requirement for an advanced diploma at my […]

Peru: How a Country Made Me a Better Teacher

I have traveled all over the world with my family. London, Paris, Rome, around Australia, and all of those trips were amazing! I saw and did things that I never thought I would. But it wasn’t until I took a trip to Peru that travel changed me as a teacher. It was my first big trip without my family with me. No mum with her guidebook pointing out sights and herding us to museums. Instead I would be surrounded by a group of educators, most of whom I had never met before. It was a leap of faith, but it was an opportunity […]

Traveling Teacher

From a young age I have loved to travel. Nothing is better than seeing new places, meeting new people and discovering what lies outside the small boarders of where I live. There is not a day that goes by where I wonder, where will I travel to next? I am always plotting my next trip, to learn more and check another country off my ever growing list of places to see. The best part of traveling is bringing my experience back to my students! As a third grade teacher I have the opportunity to not only expand my own horizons, […]
