Helsinki may just be my favorite city I have traveled to. Not too big, clean, easy to navigate and lots to see and do, what isn’t there to love? I loved spending some time there on my own before being joined first by my sister and later by my mum. It gave me a chance to discover some of my favorite places in the city and then share them with my family. Here is a break down of my favorite must see places and must do activities if you visit Helsinki. Sit on the steps of the Helsinki Cathedral. This […]
Driving the Finnish Archipelago
On one of our last days in Turku, our family drove us around the beautiful archipelago around Turku. Skies had cleared from the day before so we had great weather for seeing the sights. We had to set out early (5:30) so we could make the first ferry, but with coffee, tea and other munchies packed we were ready to tackle the day. It was interesting to drive out of the city and into more rural areas surrounding Turku. We even saw five moose grazing out in the distance at one point! After an hour of driving we reached the […]
Island Hopping Finnish Style
Where to even begin. Today was a phenomenal day. The weather was picture perfect, just right for island hopping. I met up with a friend from the blogging world, Suvi, and spent the morning at three different islands in Helsinki’s harbor. We started at Vallisaari, a recently reopened island just beyond Suomenlinna Island. People have been going off trails and disrupting the nature found there so the island has been closed for a while. They recently reopened it and you could tell people wanted to know what the island had to offer. It had beautiful scenery and some information posters […]
Helsinki Wanderings
Hyvää Juhannusta! Happy Midsummer as they say in Finland. I will miss the holiday celebration this weekend but that’s ok because in 3 short days I will take off for Finland! My bags are pretty much packed at this point letting me focusing on the good stuff, what to do once I arrive. Since I will be on my own for the first few days, it gives me a chance to wander the city with a loose itinerary of areas I want to explore and museums I want to spend hours rambling through. I have divvied up activities and planned […]
Athens Highlights: The Acropolis
We really hit the ground running for our second day in Athens. As our only full day in the city, and after seeing several big sights the day before, we knew what we wanted to see and had concocted a plan of attack. First on the plan, wake up call at 6:30 AM. Not a popular choice after a day of travel and sightseeing. But totally necessary if we were going to get a single picture of the Acropolis without a thousand of our closest tourist friends. Knowing this did not make it any easier when what felt like 10 […]
Athens on Jet Lag
What a whirlwind day one was! After long hours not keeping on our overnight flight from Boston to Munich, throwing back a free coffee in the airport and jumping on the next plane to Athens, I can’t believe we had enough steam to do some sightseeing. First and foremost we had to make our way to our hotel. The information desk lady at the airport recommended the metro as the most efficient way to get there. So we paid our fare and stumbled on to claim seats since the luggage outnumbered us between carry-ons, backpacks and luggage. The way we […]
Santorini Wish List
Most of my upcoming trip with my sister and friend will be spent on the island of Santorini. Known more for honeymooning than for groups of young 20 somethings, we will be soaking in the relaxed pace and quiet atmosphere for our girls trip. What am I looking forward to? Breathtaking views, delicious food, and even a donkey ride, check, check, check! We plan to take advantage of everything Santorini has to offer. Since we have more time in Santorini than in Athens we created a wish list of everything we hope to do while we are there. The Google Map […]
Making the Most of Athens
I can’t believe we will take off for Greece in three short days! So exciting! Our first stop in Greece will be in Athens. We will arrive Saturday afternoon, and then leave Monday morning for Santorini. Because we will be in Athens for such a short time, we have mapped out all the things we want to see and do while we are there. That way we won’t miss anything. Here is a look at our tentative plans: Saturday Get our bearings of the city once we have checked into the hotel by walking around the city. My camera sure is […]
First Time For Everything, Hostel Stay in Helsinki
Well, I went ahead and did it. The other day I officially booked my flight to Helsinki and back home from Munich for my summer adventure. June can’t come fast enough! I am so excited to spend a few weeks exploring Finland, where my great grandparents came from, and then set out to see a few other places in Europe. Even better, my sister and I will get to spend some quality time getting to know relatives we have in Turku! But before we meet our relatives, and before my sister arrives in Helsinki, I have decided to take a […]
Mercado de San Miguel
This by far has been one of my favorite places in Spain. The Mercado de San Miguel is a small food market tucked behind the Plaza Mayor. After walking around the city all day it was great to take a little break in this lively market place. There was excellent people watching, and delicious foods and drinks to be had. What I loved best about the Marcado was the buzz of activity that surrounded you as soon as you walkedthrough the doors. I met up with a few friends from our group moments after entering. It didn’t take […]
