This by far has been one of my favorite places in Spain. The Mercado de San Miguel is a small food market tucked behind the Plaza Mayor.
After walking around the city all day it was great to take a little break in this lively market place. There was excellent people watching, and delicious foods and drinks to be had.
What I loved best about the Marcado was the buzz of activity that surrounded you as soon as you walkedthrough the doors. I met up with a few friends from our group moments after entering.
It didn’t take me long to find a little beverage cart so I could join in the festivities. With a full glass in hand I was ready to stroll the aisles and see what the market had to offer.
There were stands for wine, olives, cheese, meats, fruits, sweets, roasted nuts, you name it they had it! I stuck with just my beer since we would be heading to dinner shortly, although there were many tempting dishes.
There was such a lively atmosphere with stalls around the outside edges and small tables and chairs along the inside. All around friends were gathering, chatting and sharing tapas. I couldn’t help but think this is exactly what we need in the states. If only a place like this existed in Marshfield!
After finishing up my beer, my friends and I headed out to meet up with the rest of our group at Plaza de Sol. I was sad to leave this little gem behind, I could have spent hours there. When we return to Madrid later this week I hope to return.
Have you ever been to Mercado de San Miguel? Did you love it as much as me?

Actually, yes! I have been to Mercado de San Miguel when I was in Madrid in May. We were only in the city for a day, but managed to go in and out of the market in ten minutes or so. We were really just wondering around. Nice post.. brings back great memories!
I had just about the same amount of time there…simply too little. So glad the post reminded you of your time there as well. It is a hidden gem in my opinion.
