Why I Love Blogging with Students

Over my seven years of teaching; despite grade changes, district moves, building moves, and classroom moves, there is one thing that I have done consistently, blogging with students. It is a resource that spans grade levels, abilities and curriculum. Strong writers, developing writers, everyone can access the blog and write to their best ability. It is also a resource that spans subjects. Reading, math, social studies, science; there is something to write about no matter what the subject. Link an educational website or article in a blog post and students have the opportunity to practice reading online material. This gives […]

Island Hopping Finnish Style

Where to even begin. Today was a phenomenal day. The weather was picture perfect, just right for island hopping. I met up with a friend from the blogging world, Suvi, and spent the morning at three different islands in Helsinki’s harbor.  We started at Vallisaari, a recently reopened island just beyond Suomenlinna Island. People have been going off trails and disrupting the nature found there so the island has been closed for a while. They recently reopened it and you could tell people wanted to know what the island had to offer. It had beautiful scenery and some information posters […]

Return from Spain…So Now What?

What an amazing trip through Spain! With each country I visit it still surprises me how many new things there are to learn about different cultures. The possibilities are endless for incorporating all that I learned and experienced back into my classroom, but I have come up with a few favorites that are fool proof in getting students engaged and excited about learning. Student Treasures– After each trip when I return home I have students create a class book compiling all they have learned. These class books have come a long way from the word document pages gathered together with […]

I can’t believe in less than a week I will traveling around Spain! It feels like I have been talking about and planning for this trip forever, I can’t wait to get there! They have already done a little bit of research and blogged about new things they have learned, but now it’s time to get down to business.   Before Leaving For Spain I already have mini […]

Peru: How a Country Made Me a Better Teacher

I have traveled all over the world with my family. London, Paris, Rome, around Australia, and all of those trips were amazing! I saw and did things that I never thought I would. But it wasn’t until I took a trip to Peru that travel changed me as a teacher. It was my first big trip without my family with me. No mum with her guidebook pointing out sights and herding us to museums. Instead I would be surrounded by a group of educators, most of whom I had never met before. It was a leap of faith, but it was an opportunity […]

Spain Resources for the Classroom

With holiday break finally upon me, I have time to sit down and gather more information about my next trip to Spain to present to my students. We have had a few meetings at this point where we learned some general information about Spain. At one meeting we were lucky enough to have Maura Bulman, the Foreign Language Department Head from Marshfield Public Schools, come and speak to us. She was wonderful, sharing her wealth of knowledge after years of travel and experiences in Spain. For our upcoming and final meeting before our trip, we will focus on transferring what we […]
